Sodium Polyacrylate AKA Insta Snow

There are two ways that you can get ingredients to make fake polymer snow. You can purchase insta snow at craft stores or you can collect sodium polyacrylate from disposable diapers.

This is one of the coolest products I’ve seen. All you need to do is add water to the powder and immediately make slushy snow. Keep adding water until you have the desired amount of wetness. The gel will not dissolve; the children can decide how mushy they want their snow to be. It will last for weeks.

Insta snow is safe to handle, non-toxic and guaranteed to amaze children. I have been fascinated with insta snow ever since I first saw a Steve Spangler's workshop, ten years ago!

  1. how cool is that? - my 2 year old is sitting here saying I want to get some of that!

  2. The two year old in me is saying, "I want some of that!"

I'm popping in for the first time as a result of Deborah Stewart's ABC exploration. The woman has done a lot on behalf of children -- but connecting us to each other is a pretty brilliant contribution! I just 'pinned' this article over to Pinterest!!

I chose to expound on the letter M for Music.

  3. OK I so want to do this - how many diapers do I have to open up to get this amount? Love the colour aspect of this activity!

  4. wow! Those photos are SOOO cool! It looks amazing to me, so I can only imagine what the kids think! LOL- Leeanne- better get to opening up those'll need a lot, I bet! :)

  5. Oh-my-good-golly-gosh Maria ... how cool! I LOVE that you've used it on the light box too. It looks like really amazing stuff.

  6. Can't wait to try this with our very tactile children and the new light box we just received for the classroom!

  7. We've made and played with this "fake" snow also and it's as cool as it looks. What was extra fun for us was having all the children here in diapers watching me tear them up and making snow from them :)
A little extra science in why when they pee their clothes don't get wet - absorption.

  8. Oh so cool.... Now I dont have to use packing tape on my poor son when one of the tabs rip off his diaper as I am putting it on... now I can happily say whoops... there goes another one for the snow pile! :)
